Enameling with Depth

Drapery Miniature Study by Jessica Calderwood, 2019. Enamel, copper, brass, stencils, underglaze pencil, metal spinning, 4" x 4" x 1".

This workshop will introduce participants to drawing and painting approaches in enamel by looking at a combination of contemporary and historical traditions. The workshop will allow you to use metal as a dimensional canvas, while pushing what transparent and opaque enamels can do to create depth and luscious surfaces. Starting with a copper sheet, demonstrations will be given on metal preparation, enamel sifting, stencils, the use of painting oils, underglazes, overglazes, decals, and seed beads. Participants should plan to come away with a series of working samples and process experiments. Basic enameling skills, including knowledge of metal preparation, sifting, and firing, are preferred.

Trained as a metalsmith and enamelist, Jessica Calderwood (she/her) received a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art and an MFA from Arizona State University. She has participated in artist residencies with the John Michael Kohler Arts/Industry Program, Ferro Corporation, Mesa Arts Center, and the Pittsburgh Glass Center. Work from her various series can be found in numerous public collections, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Racine Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Yale University Art Gallery, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Calderwood is currently a Professor of Art at Ball State University.
