Haystack Mountain School of Crafts
Katharine and Debby
Community-based artist residencies, hosted by Haystack, involve participation from local school students and teachers, and community members.

Fall 2008

Throughout the week of November 17-22, Haystack hosted Maine-based knitter and sculptor Katharine Cobey as a visiting artist in the Deer Isle-Stonington elementary school. During the residency, Katharine worked with island students (4th-6th grade) and was assisted by the school’s art teacher and community volunteers.

Katharine Cobey gives instructions on ‘knitting with knitting needles’ at the Deer Isle-Stonington Elementary School.

Students learned how to knit as well as use knitting to create large-scale sculptural pieces. The residency culminated with a display work done by Katharine and the students, at the elementary school. Katharine has taught in Haystack’s summer and fall programs, including a two-week workshop focusing on sculptural knitting in the summer of 2007. She is widely recognized for her innovative techniques and large-scale work and has received national recognition for her pieces, installed in galleries and museums from Anchorage to Maine.

Katharine Cobey’s residency was generously supported by grants from the Island Education Foundation, the Maine Community Foundation, and from a Schools Make Arts Relevant Today (SMART) grant from the Maine Arts Commission.
